Rumpus Machine is an award-winning band of teenage siblings from Auckland, New Zealand, performing high-energy live music at weddings, corporate events, festivals, pubs and private functions across the country. A hard-working gigging band with more than 300 live shows behind them, Rumpus Machine has also become an online sensation, building a following of over 510,000 people and attracting more than 100 million views worldwide. This unique, youthful rock act delivers energetic, top-class covers of some of the most iconic rock songs in history, while writing and performing their own guitar-driven original music.
THE HISTORY OF RUMPUS MACHINE
Forming in 2020, Rumpus Machine has gone from strength to strength, building a loyal local, national and international following.The story began back in 2015, when their Dad started teaching them all guitar. What began with a bunch of songs learned on acoustic guitars soon became the foundation for something much bigger. In 2020, Dad dusted off his bass, an electronic drum kit was added to the mix, and the girls found their instruments — drums and bass. Then Covid hit, giving them plenty of time to play, practice and create.
They started filming songs and uploading them to YouTube. The following grew rapidly, and in 2021 the band began writing original music. That same year they entered their first Rockquest, aged just 10, 10, 12 and 13.By 2023, Rumpus Machine had started playing regular pub gigs. Since then, they’ve built a packed calendar of pub, private, corporate, community and festival performances, establishing themselves as a formidable live act well beyond their years.

Covers are a huge part of what makes Rumpus Machine tick.With a repertoire of more than 120 rock covers spanning the last seven decades, they have the experience and versatility to keep a crowd moving all night. The cover-band side of Rumpus Machine has become a major part of their weekly schedule, allowing them to perform most weekends at venues and events — while their original music continues to shape the future of the band.They’ve also filmed a huge number of their covers over the last 5 years. ORIGINAL MUSIC WITH A KIWI HEART
Alongside performing more than 120 classic rock covers, Rumpus Machine also writes and records original music.Some might describe Rumpus Machine’s original sound as Kiwi reggae rock — a distinctive blend of reggae, rock and blues, driven by grooving bass lines, soaring guitar solos, powerful vocals and tight vocal harmonies.Their original catalogue has grown to around 20 songs over the past five years, and new material is constantly being written. Their original music is available on Spotify, Apple Music and all major streaming platforms.

AN AWARD-WINNING ACT
Rumpus Machine has built a strong reputation through award-winning original music, national competition success and standout live performances. The band won Auckland Council’s SUSO competition in 2024, placed 2nd nationally at the 2025 Rockquest Nationals, and took 3rd nationally at the 2024 Rockquest Nationals. They also won the Rockquest North Shore Region in both 2024 and 2025, won the AJ Hackett #Thrashmore songwriting competition in 2024, and placed 3rd nationally in the NZ Battle of the Bands 2023. In 2025, they were awarded the Pat McMinn Rising Star Award by the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand.
BIG STAGES BIGGER CROWDS
Despite their young age, Rumpus Machine has already built an impressive reputation, headlining major festivals and sharing the stage with some of New Zealand's best known artists.In January 2025, they opened the Greenstone Concert in Taupō for Cold Chisel, Icehouse, Everclear and Bic Runga in front of a crowd of 18,000 people. They’ve performed and headlined Beach Hop twice, Kerikeri Christmas in the Park, Cruz’n the Bayz & Mangakino Lake Hop twice, Takapuna Rocks and The Festival of Lights. They’ve also appeared at Music in Parks three times, Soundsplash, LegacyFest, Kumeu Classic Car Festival, Kōwhai Festival and NZ Music Month. Along the way, they’ve shared stages with New Zealand acts including Hello Sailor, Jordan Luck and Tadpole, as well as international artists Skindred from Wales and The Mad Caddies from California.

Keeping it in the family, Rumpus Machine is a four-piece sibling band featuring Daniel Hyde on lead vocals and guitar, Matthew Hyde on guitar and backing vocals, Hannah Hyde on bass guitar and backing vocals, and her twin sister Ashley Hyde on drums and backing vocals. Four siblings, one tight-knit band, delivering great songs with a powerful, energetic, polished live sound.
